Hey there!
I'm Derek Queen (he/him) and I'm a graphic designer from southeast Michigan. I wear a lot of hats here in metro Detroit, always maintaining my goal to further the missions of others in my community with well-thought design.
My design career spans 10+ years, having worked in various sectors including government, food and retail, business start-ups, nonprofits, and organizations within higher education. With brand development, advertising, social media management, package design, and more under my belt, I bring a variety of hats to the table. However big or small the project, I'm ready to work with you!
What does Too Many Hats mean?
There's a good chance I'll be wearing a hat when you meet me, but my freelance practice's name goes beyond my fashion choices!
I work as a full-time graphic designer in the Media Relations Unit of the Detroit Police Department, supporting the department's public-facing deliverables like social media graphics, annual reports, and advertising of community outreach efforts. I also serve as the City of Detroit's LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group Chair.
Aside from my work for the city, I serve as the Vice President of the Pontiac Creative Arts Center and as the Marketing Director of Stonewall Sports Detroit. I support both of these nonprofit organizations with graphic design work, social media management, and general communications.
Oh, you're still curious about ME?
I grew up in Auburn Hills, MI and studied graphic design at Oakland University.
I keep plenty busy when I'm not working or engaged with my side projects. I enjoy playing volleyball and captain a billiards team through Stonewall Sports Detroit. I can often be found reading a good book, thrift shopping, or training to become a Pokémon master!
My main hobby, however, is collecting Scooby-Doo memorabilia! My collection is one of the largest in the world, including toys, movies, books, comics, art, and more. You're welcome to follow my collecting journey on my Scooby-Doo Instagram here
