The Detroit Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of Detroit, led by Chief of Police Todd A. Bettison. With 12 precinct stations, 2,500 sworn police officers, and 900 non-sworn professional staff, DPD is the largest police agency in the State of Michigan. Since 2022, I've worked in the Media Relations Unit which supports all public information needs for the department.
The Media Relations Unit manages all communications between the department and the news media. It manages all the department's official social media platforms, organizes press conferences, and handles photo/video coverage of department events in conjunction with the Central Photo & Graphic Arts Unit.
My graphic design work in this unit largely supports promoting community events, creating social media content, and working on internal projects such as the Detroit Police Department's Annual Report. I occasionally assist with the production of signage and creating artwork for deliverables like t-shirts or recruitment advertising. All design projects are expected to adhere to the City of Detroit's brand guidelines.
Under the direction of former Mayor Mike Duggan and his communications staff, our unit was tasked with developing the mayor's Detroit Rewards TV initiative. This initiative worked closely with Crime Stoppers to offer cash rewards for anonymous tips on various crimes taking place in the city. I created the logo for this initiative and created a sub-brand for it that fit into the umbrella of the city's overall brand guidelines (such as consistent typography and color schemes). Projects I've assisted with for Detroit Rewards TV include digital kiosk ads, billboards, People Mover ads, social media templates, posters, and postcards.
