Stonewall Sports Detroit is the Detroit chapter of a national nonprofit organization promoting community and philanthropy through LGBTQ+ sports leagues. Detroit's chapter was founded in 2019, at the time only offering a volleyball league. The chapter now offers seven different sports throughout the year that are open to all skill-levels and genders.
As the organization's Marketing Director, I'm responsible for promoting Stonewall's sports leagues, events, and other initiatives. I've developed a visual brand for the chapter, creating icons for the nonprofit's sports programs that draw on the rainbow colors that represent the LGBTQ+ community. This branding is reinforced in community partnerships, social media advertising, apparel, and more.
Detroit's brand has a fun, zany approach to drawing in new members regardless of their athletic level. Relying on humorous imagery, memes, and original photography of players (dubbed "Stonewallers"), Stonewall's lighthearted marketing makes its advertising and social media content very relatable and engaging.
When working on projects for the national Stonewall Sports organization, its program's emphasis on inclusion and community take precedent to Detroit's approach. Like the national organization, Detroit is reliant on inclusive language and affirming deliverables such as player nametags.
